President John Dramani Mahama has unveiled plans to establish two major development projects in the Savannah Region — the Catholic Science and Technology University and a regional hospital in Damongo.

The announcement was made during a courtesy call on the President by the Catholic Metropolitan Archbishop of Tamale, Most Rev. Philip Naameh, at the Jubilee House.

According to President Mahama, initial funding for the proposed university will be drawn from the $30 million grant pledged by Chinese President Xi Jinping. He further explained that the regional hospital will also serve as a teaching facility for the university, which will include a Faculty of Medical Sciences to train doctors and allied health professionals.

During the meeting, the President reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to revitalizing Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions to enhance practical skills development across the country.

Archbishop Naameh, who suggested the name and location of the new university, highlighted key educational and social challenges affecting northern Ghana and appealed for government intervention.

The meeting was attended by Minister for Education Haruna Iddrisu, Presidential Advisor Joyce Bawah Mogtari, Elvis Afriyie Ankrah from the Office of the President, and Rita Naa Odoley Sowah, Deputy Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs.
