Kufuor urges support for persons with disabilities

Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has urged Ghanaians to reaffirm their dedication to creating an inclusive society that respects the rights and dignity of persons with disabilities (PWDs).

In a goodwill message released on Tuesday, December 2, 2025, ahead of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD), Mr. Kufuor noted that this year’s theme, “Fostering disability-inclusive societies for advancing social progress,” reflects Ghana’s ongoing efforts to promote equity and social inclusion.

He recalled the passage of the Persons with Disability Act, 2006 (Act 715) during his presidency as a landmark achievement in protecting PWDs’ rights and aligning Ghana with national and international standards.

Mr. Kufuor praised the resilience and achievements of PWDs in education, entrepreneurship, arts, science, sports, and public service, stressing that disability does not mean inability.

He also acknowledged ongoing challenges, including limited accessibility, employment barriers, healthcare gaps, and social stigma, and called for renewed national commitment to eliminate prejudice and ensure effective policies for PWDs.

The former president encouraged all Ghanaians to use the occasion to strengthen efforts toward a more inclusive and equitable society.
