- Three suspects arrested during coordinated operation on December 15
- Tramadol, suspected cannabis, and an unregistered motorbike seized
In a well-coordinated operation, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Special Operations Team has dismantled a suspected all-female drug distribution network in Tamale, arresting three key suspects believed to be involved in the sale of illicit substances, including opioids and cannabis.
The arrests, carried out on Monday, December 15, form part of intensified efforts to combat drug abuse and trafficking in the Northern Region. The operation covered several strategic locations in Tamale, including markets and taxi ranks, and began during routine patrols in Kalpohini, a densely populated suburb of the regional capital.
The first arrest was made when officers intercepted Aisha, who was operating a provision shop in Kalpohini allegedly as a front for drug peddling. A search on her led to the discovery of six sachets of tramadol tablets. Police also impounded an unregistered motorbike suspected to have been used in distributing the drugs.
During the operation, Aisha’s alleged accomplice, Asia, was also arrested at the shop.
Subsequent searches at Aisha’s residence uncovered additional evidence, including dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp (cannabis), indicating that the group was dealing in multiple prohibited substances.
Further investigations led officers to Hawabu, identified by Aisha as the intermediary linking her to the main supplier. Hawabu was later tracked down and arrested.
All three suspects—Aisha, Asia, and Hawabu—are currently in police custody at the Sakasaka Police Station, assisting with investigations. The seized items, including tramadol tablets, suspected cannabis, and the unregistered motorbike, have been handed over to investigators.
Speaking on the operation, ASP Bawah Abdul Jalil, spokesperson for the IGP Special Operations Team, said the arrests highlight the team’s professionalism and commitment to tackling drug peddling, particularly the growing abuse of pharmaceutical opioids in Northern Ghana.
He added that the operation has strengthened public confidence in law enforcement and reaffirmed the team’s resolve to rid the region of criminal activities.
