GHS to Launch 24-Hour CHPS and Polyclinic Services

- GHS plans to extend CHPS and polyclinic operations to 24 hours
- Dr. Samuel Kaba Akoriyea: initiative ensures round-the-clock care
- Security will be enhanced at facilities to support night operations
The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has announced plans to operate Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) compounds and polyclinics on a 24-hour basis. This move aligns with the government’s broader 24-hour economic policy and aims to improve continuous access to healthcare nationwide.
GHS Director-General, Dr. Samuel Kaba Akoriyea, made the announcement during a press briefing in Accra on Monday, July 14, 2025. He emphasized that the initiative is a strategic response to the country’s growing healthcare demands and will be supported by enhanced security measures at health facilities.
“This is a timely intervention that will ensure no Ghanaian is denied access to healthcare, regardless of the hour,” Dr. Akoriyea stated.
The announcement follows the government’s recent commitment to expand health infrastructure, including the construction of 600 new CHPS compounds across all districts by the end of 2025.
Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Minister of State in Charge of Government Communications, confirmed that each district is expected to build at least two new CHPS facilities this year.
“At this rate, we anticipate constructing 600 compounds in 2025 alone, and if this momentum continues, over 2,000 CHPS compounds could be built within the next four years,” he said.
Together, these efforts aim to strengthen primary healthcare delivery, especially in underserved areas, and ensure healthcare services are available to all Ghanaians—day and night.
