GHS issues harmattan health alert

The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has issued a public health advisory as the country approaches the dry harmattan season, despite recent rains in some regions.

In a statement signed by Acting Director-General Dr. Samuel Kaba Akoriyea, the GHS cautioned that the harsh weather conditions could lead to several health challenges, including skin dryness, dehydration, respiratory issues, eye irritation, and an elevated risk of meningitis, as Ghana falls within Africa’s meningitis belt.

The Service urged the public to regularly moisturize with oil-based products, stay hydrated, eat water-rich foods, and wear face masks in dusty environments. Individuals with asthma and other respiratory conditions were specifically advised to avoid dusty areas and minimize outdoor exposure.

Other recommended preventive measures include wearing sunglasses or protective eyewear, washing hands frequently, and seeking medical care promptly when feeling unwell.

The GHS reiterated the Ministry of Health’s and its own commitment to protecting public health during the harmattan period and encouraged citizens to adhere to the outlined safety guidelines.
