The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has opened an investigation into an alleged assault involving a journalist and military personnel in Walewale, located in the North East Region.

The incident, which was reported on Monday, January 26, 2026, reportedly took place on the outskirts of Walewale—an area that has recently faced increased insecurity following a series of attacks on public transport that have resulted in fatalities and injuries.

According to reports, soldiers travelling in an armoured vehicle and a military truck from Bolgatanga to Tamale allegedly stopped in Walewale and assaulted the North East Regional Correspondent of Media General, along with several civilians, without any apparent provocation.

The soldiers are also accused of causing damage to property at the scene, including motorbikes and commercial vehicles, thereby instilling fear among local residents.

Information available suggests that the journalist was detained for over four hours, during which images documenting his injuries were allegedly deleted from his mobile phone. In a statement, the Ghana Armed Forces confirmed awareness of the incident and indicated that investigations are underway to ascertain the facts.

GAF further noted that the current security challenges in the North East and Upper East Regions have led to intensified military operations, some of which may be carried out without prior notice.

The Armed Forces appealed to the public to cooperate with security agencies in the interest of peace and stability, adding that appropriate action will be taken once the investigation is concluded.
