An unidentified driver has been shot dead by suspected armed robbers on the Ntotroso-Sunyani Highway in Ghana’s Bono Region.
The tragic incident happened last Friday while the victim was transporting passengers from Sunyani to Bibiani in a Ford vehicle. According to Richard Adu, the Assemblyman for the Atronie Electoral Area, the driver was shot in the head.
Fear has gripped local residents and commuters, who say the deteriorating condition of the Ntotroso-Sunyani road — which links the Ahafo and Bono Regions — has made it a hotspot for highway robberies.
The driver’s body has been deposited at the Sunyani Teaching Hospital morgue, while two passengers who suffered gunshot wounds are being treated at the same facility.
The attack has reignited long-standing concerns over safety on the route, prompting fresh calls for government intervention. Residents urged authorities to rehabilitate the road, which they say has been neglected since its construction during former President John Agyekum Kufuor’s administration.
Many commuters have reported frequent robberies and live gunfire, making travel along the route increasingly dangerous.
A female farmer from Atronie lamented that the situation is now so dire that she and other farmers are afraid to access their farmlands.
Locals claim the problem is getting worse, and they believe the security agencies are aware of the repeated attacks — which they attribute largely to the road’s poor condition.
