Cocoa farmers across Ghana are threatening to stage a nationwide protest next week over unpaid monies owed by the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) for cocoa supplied since November 2025. The delayed payments, they say, have caused severe financial strain, affecting their ability to meet basic needs such as healthcare and school fees.
Speaking to Citi News, Francis Teinor, President of the Mankrong Cocoa Cooperative Farmers Association, called on COCOBOD and government authorities to settle the outstanding payments promptly to prevent disruptions in the cocoa sector.
“The situation is hitting farmers hard. Many are sick but cannot afford hospital care. School has reopened, and parents are struggling to pay fees. We also cannot store our cocoa due to lack of facilities. It’s been about six weeks with no payment, and the sector is suffering. If COCOBOD’s CEO does not act, farmers will take to the streets next week,” Teinor warned.
He stressed that the unrest could escalate if COCOBOD fails to address the arrears immediately, signaling widespread dissatisfaction among cocoa producers.
