CMB Traders, Drivers Protest Alleged Land Takeover

Story Highlights
  • Protest held in Accra’s CMB area against private land takeover
  • GPRTU and other unions lead march to Jubilee House
  • Unions call on Presidency to protect lorry station

Traders and transport unions in the CMB area of Accra staged a protest today, Tuesday, September 16, 2025, over what they claim is an attempt by private developers to take over land belonging to the lorry station.

The demonstration—led by groups such as the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), the Concerned Drivers Association, the Commercial Transport Operators, and the Container Owners Association—kicked off at the Ridge Roundabout. Protesters are marching to the Jubilee House, where they plan to submit a petition to the Presidency.

According to the unions, the alleged encroachment has displaced numerous traders and drivers who depend on the lorry station for their livelihoods.

They argue that the forced relocation has pushed traders onto the streets, worsening traffic congestion and creating serious safety concerns in the area.

The demonstrators are calling on the Presidency to intervene and safeguard the lorry station, which they say remains vital to Accra’s transport network and trading ecosystem.
