Lawyers for the Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman, Bernard Antwi-Boasiako (Chairman Wontumi), and Akonta Mining say they will seek a court order compelling prosecutors to release additional documents they consider essential to their defence.
The legal team claims that crucial materials needed to prepare their case were absent from the disclosures provided by the State.
Antwi-Boasiako and Akonta Mining are on trial for allegedly allowing mining activities on their Samreboi concession without the required approvals.
Tuesday’s hearing, held on November 25, was meant to serve as a case management conference. However, lead defence lawyer Andy Appiah-Kubi told the court that they would be filing a formal request for further disclosures.
This came after prosecutors maintained that the documents submitted on October 31 and November 11 represented “the complete set of materials” they intend to use in the trial.
Appiah-Kubi noted that the defence had expected additional disclosures — including documents in the prosecution’s possession that may not be used as evidence but could still assist the accused during case management. He added that although a motion for full disclosure had already been drafted, it had not yet been filed, prompting a plea for more time.
The presiding judge instructed the defence to file and serve the motion once ready, and also ordered the accused to provide the names and addresses of all witnesses they plan to call if the prosecution establishes a prima facie case.
The case has been adjourned to December 8, 2025, at 10:00 a.m., when the defence’s application for additional disclosures will be heard.
