The Controller and Accountant-General’s Department (CAGD) has assured more than 2,000 public sector workers whose salaries were temporarily suspended that their pay will be restored once they verify their employment status and complete the necessary clearance with the Ghana Audit Service.
The Department explained that the salary suspension was implemented following recommendations from the Auditor-General and in strict compliance with Public Financial Management (PFM) laws. It reiterated its commitment to transparency, accountability, and safeguarding the integrity of the government payroll system.
Speaking to Citi News on Monday, February 2, 2026, the Controller and Accountant-General, Kwasi Agyei, reaffirmed the Department’s dedication to transparent payroll administration and the timely payment of salaries in accordance with PFM regulations.
He explained that a headcount exercise conducted by the Auditor-General last year identified officers who had not participated in the verification process. “Just last month, the Auditor-General informed us that approximately 6,000 officers had failed to take part in the exercise and, as a result, should not be paid,” he said.
“However, after conducting our internal review, we found that issues affecting the majority had already been resolved, leaving about 2,000 officers who were genuinely affected,” Mr. Agyei added.
He noted that salary payments for the affected staff were subsequently suspended, and their respective institutions have been formally notified to direct them to the Ghana Audit Service for verification. “Once the Auditor-General completes the verification process and officially communicates the outcome to us, we will promptly reinstate their salaries,” he assured.
