Asante Akyem Onion Farmers Demand Import Controls

Story Highlights
  • Asante Akyem North farmers urge gov’t to regulate foreign onion imports
  • Imported onions from Burkina Faso, Nigeria, and Niger undercut local prices
  • Farmers report a successful season with bumper harvests

Onion farmers in Asante Akyem North are calling on the government to regulate the importation of foreign onions in order to protect locally grown produce and ensure a stable market for Ghanaian farmers.

According to the farmers, the influx of onions from neighboring countries such as Burkina Faso, Nigeria, and Niger is negatively impacting sales, as traders and consumers often prefer the cheaper imported varieties.

Speaking to Adom News, the farmers shared that this year’s farming season has yielded a bumper harvest—enough to meet the country’s onion demand. They are therefore urging the government to introduce restrictions on imported onions, particularly during the local harvest season.

Moro Adamu, Chairman of the Asante Akyem North Onion Farmers Association, emphasized the need for government intervention through policies that would protect the onion farming sector. He believes such support would not only boost agriculture but also encourage youth participation in farming and reduce illegal mining (galamsey) in the region
