The government has strongly criticized what it calls an attempted arrest of JoyNews journalist Carlos Calony, who was covering the demolition of a warehouse belonging to businessman Daniel McKorley, widely known as McDan.
The incident reportedly took place on Wednesday, July 30, 2025, during which Mr. Calony and a civilian were allegedly assaulted by a soldier.
In an official statement, Presidential Spokesperson and Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, condemned the soldier’s conduct as “completely unacceptable.”
He emphasized the Mahama administration’s firm stance on press freedom and the protection of journalists, revealing that National Security has been tasked with investigating the matter and ensuring accountability.
“On behalf of President John Dramani Mahama, I reaffirm his steadfast commitment to the freedom and safety of journalists,” the statement read.
It added: “A free and independent press is vital to our democracy, serving as a foundation for accountability, transparency, and an informed citizenry.”
