Afenyo-Markin declines comment on ECOWAS saga

Minority Leader and New Patriotic Party (NPP) MP, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has chosen not to comment on the recent controversy surrounding the ECOWAS Parliament, stating that some issues are better handled through time and internal party discussions.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem morning show, Mr. Afenyo-Markin said, “I won’t respond to that matter; let’s discuss something else.”

When asked whether he would appear before the Privileges Committee, he replied, “Not every issue requires a response; some things are best left to time. As a member of the NPP, the party will address it. Not every matter calls for a public statement.”

His remarks come in response to accusations by Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga, who claims that Afenyo-Markin is in contempt of Parliament and should face the Privileges Committee for disciplinary action. The allegations arise from his participation in the ECOWAS Parliament session held in Port Harcourt, Nigeria, from September 25 to 28, 2025, despite being removed from Ghana’s official delegation.

During Tuesday’s parliamentary sitting, Ayariga cited Order 31(O) of the Standing Orders, which defines contempt as any act or omission that undermines the dignity or authority of Parliament or tarnishes its reputation. He argued that by attending the session after his removal, the Minority Leader had “clearly affronted the authority of Parliament” and should be held accountable.
