Accused Drug Smugglers Granted GHS13M Bail Each

Story Highlights
  • Four individuals granted GHS13 million bail each by Accra Circuit Court
  • Accused of attempting to smuggle 73 slabs of suspected cocaine through KIA
  • Each must provide four sureties; one backed by GHS1 million property

An Accra Circuit Court, under the leadership of Her Ladyship Sedinam Awo Kwadam, has approved bail totaling thirteen million Ghana cedis (GHS 13,000,000) for each of the four individuals accused of attempting to smuggle suspected cocaine at the Swissport cargo terminal of Kotoka International Airport.

The defendants face charges of conspiracy to commit a crime and unlawful possession of narcotic substances.

On April 23, 2025, customs officers conducting routine inspections at the Swissport Export Section discovered three wooden crates among cargo destined for Brussels, Belgium. Upon examination, these crates were found to contain 73 compressed slabs of a substance that tested positive for cocaine. The accused have denied any involvement with the illicit drugs.

Each defendant’s bail is contingent upon providing four sureties, one of whom must offer a verified property valued at one million Ghana cedis. All sureties are required to be civil servants earning a minimum of five thousand Ghana cedis per month. Additionally, the accused are prohibited from obtaining new passports and must surrender their current ones to the court registry. Their details have been submitted to passport authorities to prevent future issuance. They are also placed on a national stop list to restrict international travel without explicit court permission and must report to the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) twice weekly.

This case underscores the ongoing efforts by Ghanaian authorities to combat drug trafficking and uphold the rule of law.
