13,500 Nurses Added to Government Payroll

The Ministry of Health has reported notable progress in improving the welfare of health workers, announcing that 13,500 nurses have been added to the government payroll.

In an official statement, the Ministry revealed that the leadership of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) paid a courtesy visit to Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh on Wednesday, September 3, 2025.

During the meeting, the GRNMA delegation issued an unreserved apology to the Minister for recent public criticisms and discussed ways to enhance collaboration between the nursing fraternity and the government.

The Ministry highlighted key developments, including the establishment of the Ghana Medical Training Fund (GMTF) and substantial investments in upgrading healthcare infrastructure nationwide.

It also confirmed that all outstanding payments related to nursing training allowances and National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) claims have been cleared. Furthermore, the government has covered 50% of admission fees for students in nursing training institutions.

Reaffirming its commitment to health sector reforms, the Ministry assured that the implementation of the collective bargaining agreement with GRNMA remains a priority, as part of broader efforts to achieve Universal Health Coverage (UHC).

The statement called for calm among stakeholders and the public, emphasizing the government’s continued dedication to addressing challenges in the health sector.

The GRNMA delegation included immediate past President Alice Darkoa Asare-Allotey, current President Dr. Krobea Asante, Perpetual Ofori-Ampofo, and General Secretary Dr. David Tenkorang-Twum.
