The Atiwa West District Mining Taskforce has apprehended eleven foreign nationals for their alleged involvement in illegal mining activities within the Atewa Forest Reserve in the Eastern Region.
The operation, spearheaded by Chief Inspector Akuffo Abraham, was part of ongoing efforts to combat galamsey and safeguard the district’s forest cover and water resources.
During the exercise, mining equipment discovered at the site was destroyed, and the affected areas were secured to prevent further environmental damage.
Commenting on the arrests, Atiwa West District Chief Executive, Johnson Amo Anom, cautioned individuals engaged in illegal mining to abandon the activity, reaffirming the Assembly’s zero-tolerance stance on environmental destruction.
“Illegal mining has no place in Atiwa West. We remain committed to protecting our forests and water bodies, and offenders will be dealt with in accordance with the law,” he said.
The suspects have since been handed over to the relevant security agencies for further investigations and possible prosecution.
The DCE also urged residents to assist authorities in the fight against illegal mining by reporting suspicious activities promptly.
