The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has expressed his strong desire to see golf become one of the most popular sports in Ghana. While football currently dominates the sporting scene in the country, the King believes it’s time to give golf a bigger spotlight.

Speaking at the Dinner and Dance event that marked the end of the 68th Asantehene Open Golf Championship on June 14, 2025, the Monarch shared how he is personally leading this change. He revealed that his efforts have already started at home, where he is actively encouraging one of his granddaughters to take up the sport.

“She’s a medical doctor and likes table tennis,” Otumfuo said, “but I’m working on getting her to fall in love with golf.” He added that he remains hopeful she will eventually join in, thanks to his persistence.

Otumfuo went on to mention that both his wife and all of his children already play golf, something he finds deeply satisfying. “It makes me proud,” he said. “I will do everything to make golf a leading game in Ghana.”

The King also spoke about the health benefits of playing golf, describing it as his personal secret to staying youthful. “People often say I don’t look 75,” he joked. “But I am, based on what my mother told me.”

He further encouraged the youth of Ghana to take interest in the sport, highlighting its value beyond competition. According to him, golf teaches patience, focus, and discipline—qualities that are essential not just on the course, but in everyday life.
