The United States has announced a suspension of immigrant visa processing for 75 countries, including Nigeria and Ghana, as part of an effort to enhance national security and refine vetting procedures.

A spokesperson from the State Department confirmed that consular officers have been directed to halt the issuance of immigrant visas while a review is conducted.

The suspension, set to begin on January 21, will remain in effect indefinitely.

A memo obtained by Fox News Digital reveals that the pause will impact 27 African nations, 22 countries in Asia, 8 in Europe, 13 in North America and the Caribbean, 3 in South America, and 1 in Oceania.

Among the African nations affected are Algeria, Cameroon, Cape Verde, Côte d’Ivoire, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Egypt, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Liberia, Libya, Morocco, Nigeria, the Republic of the Congo, Rwanda, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania, Togo, Tunisia, Uganda, and Yemen.

This suspension is expected to affect thousands of prospective immigrants and comes amid ongoing debates over U.S. immigration policies and national security concerns.
