Tragic Stampede at El-Wak Stadium Claims Lives of GAF Recruitment Applicants

Story Highlights
  • Priscilla Nyamalor, 22, died in the GAF recruitment stampede at El-Wak Stadium
  • Two of the six deceased were from Kasoa
  • Mother Abigail shared the last calls with her daughter, who reported overcrowding before the tragedy

A grieving mother from Kasoa, Abigail Nyamalor, has recounted the tragic events that led to the death of her 22-year-old daughter, Priscilla, during the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) recruitment stampede at El-Wak Stadium.

Two of the six individuals who lost their lives in the incident, including Priscilla, were from Kasoa.

Abigail revealed that her daughter had informed the family before leaving home for the recruitment exercise on Wednesday morning. Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, she recalled bidding Priscilla farewell, reassuring her that God would guide her.

Priscilla later called to report that the venue was overcrowded.
“She told me there were a lot of people there, but I told her that God would be with her and guide her. Then she said she was going to switch off her phone so I wouldn’t be able to reach her, but she promised she would come home safely,” Abigail recounted.

Panic set in when her calls went unanswered.
“I tried calling her several times, but the calls wouldn’t go through. Eventually, a man answered, asking me to hold on, but no one spoke after that, so I hung up,” she said.

The devastating truth came later.
“When I called again, I was told my daughter had fallen in the stampede and people had stepped on her. She was at the 37 Military Hospital,” Abigail said, breaking down in tears.

She added, “When we went to the mortuary, my daughter was there. I couldn’t find any of her belongings. She was only 22 years old.”

In addition to the six deaths, several others sustained injuries and are currently receiving treatment at 37 Military Hospital.
