Traders at Odawna Market Decry Lack of Trash Bins, Call For Improved Sanitation

Story Highlights
  • Odawna Market traders demand more trash bins to tackle garbage crisis
  • Garbage accumulates on pedestrian walkways, traders forced to store waste in sacks
  • Sanitation efforts hindered by stolen dustbins and rampant littering in the area

Traders at the bustling Odawna market are sounding the alarm over the scarcity of trash bins along the Kwame Nkrumah Circle, leading to mounting piles of rubbish on pedestrian walkways. Despite cleaning efforts, the insufficient number of dustbins hinders progress in maintaining a clean environment.

Traders expressed frustration over the situation, stating that they often have to store garbage in sacks for days before collection. “There are no dustbins anywhere. We sweep and pack the rubbish into sacks for days before collection. This is due to the lack of trash bins, promoting littering everywhere,” a trader lamented to Channel One news.

Nii Adjei Tawiah, Municipal Chief Executive Officer of the Korley Klottey Municipal Assembly, acknowledged that some individuals dispose of household waste along the road, contributing to the problem. He also noted that dustbins placed along the stretch have been stolen, forcing the assembly to chain them to metal frames, making emptying difficult.

The assembly works with security agencies to penalize offenders, but challenges persist. Traders are calling for additional trash bins to address the issue and improve sanitation in the area.
