NCA Shuts Down 59 Radio Stations Over Regulatory Breaches

Story Highlights
  • Regulatory Breach: 59 stations ordered to suspend operations for violating Electronic Communications Regulations (L.I. 1991)
  • Minister Sam George cautioned in March 2025 about potential suspensions
  • Stations can resume operations after resolving non-compliance issues

The National Communications Authority (NCA) has ordered 59 broadcasting stations across Ghana—including Asaase Radio, Wontumi FM, and Happy FM—to halt operations for failing to meet regulatory standards.

In a statement, the NCA said the directive targets stations that violated key provisions of the Electronic Communications Regulations, 2011 (L.I. 1991), particularly Regulations 54 and 56, as well as conditions tied to their broadcasting licenses.

This enforcement follows a prior warning issued in March 2025 by the Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovation, Sam George, who had cautioned that 57 stations risked suspension over similar infractions. At the time, he emphasized the action was corrective—not punitive—and encouraged stations to address their regulatory shortcomings.

According to the NCA, the enforcement is being rolled out in phases, starting with stations flagged in its latest Frequency Audit Report. So far, 62 stations have been affected. The NCA clarified that these outlets either lack valid broadcasting licenses or have failed to meet essential compliance obligations. They must resolve these issues before resuming operations.

While recognizing the critical role of radio in national development and civic engagement, the NCA stressed the importance of full regulatory compliance. It reaffirmed its commitment to upholding order, accountability, and transparency in the broadcasting sector, and urged all licensed operators to meet their legal and operational obligations.
