Ernest Kumi, the Member of Parliament for Akwatia and representative of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has reportedly passed away.
According to sources close to his family and party, Mr. Kumi died on Monday, July 7, 2025, though the cause of death remains unconfirmed. As of now, official statements from both the NPP and the Parliament of Ghana are yet to be released, and funeral arrangements have not been announced.
Mr. Kumi was serving his first term in Parliament, having secured the Akwatia seat in what was one of the most hotly contested races during the December 2024 general elections.
The Akwatia constituency, located in Ghana’s Eastern Region, has long been considered a swing seat, frequently alternating between the NPP and the National Democratic Congress (NDC). It was identified as a key battleground during the last election cycle.
Mr. Kumi won the seat for the NPP in a race that was marred by allegations of vote-buying, irregularities at polling stations, and elevated political tensions leading up to the vote.
