Deputy Minister of Food and Agriculture, John Dumelo, has called on Ghanaians to work together in building a self-sufficient and food-secure nation.
Speaking at the Citi Business Forum in Accra on Thursday, June 19, under the theme “Harnessing Agribusiness for Economic Growth: Expanding Ghana’s Agribusiness Frontiers,” Dumelo reaffirmed the government’s commitment to promoting year-round farming as a foundation for national food security. He emphasized that this goal cannot be achieved without active public-private sector collaboration.
“Our government is focused on supporting farming throughout the year,” he stated. “This requires irrigation systems, and that’s where the private sector comes in. We encourage everyone to explore the agribusiness space and help transform agriculture in Ghana.”
Dumelo stressed that with the right investment in irrigation infrastructure and agricultural innovation, Ghana can break its dependence on seasonal rainfall and substantially increase productivity all year round.
He also highlighted the need for citizen participation and creativity in driving sustainable agricultural development.
“Let’s combine our efforts to create a resilient, food-secure, and self-reliant Ghana for future generations,” he urged.
His remarks align with the government’s broader strategy to strengthen food systems, attract private investment, and bolster Ghana’s capacity to withstand both climate and economic shocks—especially at a time when global food security remains a pressing concern.
