BoG Governor Reassures Public of Cedi’s Strength Amid Temporary Pressures

The Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), Dr. Johnson Asiama, has reassured Ghanaians that the cedi remains one of the strongest performing currencies globally, despite recent seasonal trade pressures and a dip in remittance inflows.

Speaking at the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting on September 15, 2025, Dr. Asiama acknowledged that remittances, a vital source of foreign exchange for many households, have slowed in recent weeks. He also noted that seasonal fluctuations in trade are contributing to increased foreign currency demand.

However, he emphasized that these challenges are short-term and manageable, not indicative of any fundamental weakness in the economy.

“Despite the seasonal pressures and a slowdown in remittance inflows, the cedi has appreciated by approximately 21% year-to-date as of September 12,” he stated.

Dr. Asiama added that the cedi’s performance now places it alongside other top-performing global currencies such as the Russian ruble, Swedish krona, Norwegian krone, Swiss franc, euro, and British pound.

He attributed the cedi’s strength to prudent monetary policy, improved foreign exchange reserves, and enhanced regulatory oversight.

“Our enforcement of foreign exchange rules and sound macroeconomic management continue to bolster investor confidence,” he said.

Economic analysts also point to the cedi’s resilience as a factor helping reduce the cost of imports, ease inflationary pressures, and lower operating costs for businesses reliant on foreign inputs.

However, they caution that maintaining this upward trend will require strong export performance, steady remittance flows, and reduced dependence on volatile commodities.

Dr. Asiama called on citizens, businesses, and policymakers to maintain confidence in the cedi, stressing that public trust is key to sustaining its strength. He also assured that the central bank remains vigilant and ready to act to preserve financial stability.
