- Arrest followed police surveillance after community tip-off
- Police posed as buyers to apprehend the suspect
The Eastern South Police Command has arrested a man, identified as Coffie Agyemang, for allegedly attempting to sell his three-year-old son for GH¢1 million.
The suspect, a resident of Kwamang in the Denkyembour District of the Eastern Region, was apprehended following intelligence gathered by the Akwatia police.
Community members reported that the suspect had confided in a friend about his intention to sell his child due to severe financial difficulties. This information was passed on to the police, who subsequently placed the suspect under surveillance.
Police officers, posing as potential buyers, engaged the suspect in negotiations, during which an amount of GH¢1 million was reportedly agreed upon. The suspect allegedly brought the child to a predetermined meeting point, where he was arrested.
There are also allegations that the suspect planned to have the child killed for ritual purposes, with the body later returned to him to suggest the child had died elsewhere. Authorities say these claims are part of an ongoing investigation.
Confirming the arrest, DSP David Fianko Okyere, Public Relations Officer of the Eastern South Police Command, stated that investigations are ongoing to determine the full circumstances of the case.
The child has been placed in protective custody as the investigation continues.
