New transport fares take effect August 8

- Public transport fares to rise by 20% from August 8, 2025
- GRTCC blames Energy Sector Levy and maintenance costs
- Public urged to stay calm and cooperate with new pricing
The Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) has announced a 20% increase in public transport fares, set to take effect on Friday, August 8, 2025.
Speaking to Adom News on Monday, August 4, GRTCC General Secretary Emmanuel Ohene-Yeboah confirmed the upcoming fare adjustment, adding that an official statement would be released soon.
Mr. Ohene-Yeboah explained that the decision was driven by rising operational costs faced by transport operators. He highlighted the recent implementation of a GH₵1 Energy Sector Levy on July 16 as a major factor contributing to higher expenses, including fuel, spare parts, and vehicle maintenance.
“This shouldn’t come as a surprise,” he said. “Back in May, we agreed to reduce fares following the government’s request, in hopes that operating costs would decline. Unfortunately, the reverse has happened.”
He emphasized that transport unions are also feeling the financial pressure and urged the public to remain calm and supportive of the new fares.
“Maintenance costs have become unbearable, putting serious strain on our operations. Without this adjustment, the transport sector would be in jeopardy,” he added. He noted that the decision was made in collaboration with other key transport unions.
The 20% fare increase will apply across all public transport services, including shared taxis, intra-city “trotro” minibuses, long-distance buses, and freight trucks.
The GRTCC is appealing to commuters, drivers, and the wider public to understand and cooperate with the new pricing to ensure a smooth transition.
