GPRTU unaware of announced 20% fare hike

Story Highlights
  • GPRTU surprised by GRTCC’s 20% fare increase announcement
  • Union says it was not part of any consultations
  • Implementation by August 8 may not be realistic

The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) says it was not consulted on the recently announced 20% increase in public transport fares by the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC).

In an interview with Adom News’ Jagri Boaz Binyinjom, GPRTU’s Deputy Public Relations Officer, Samuel Amoah, expressed shock at the announcement, insisting the union had no prior knowledge of or involvement in the decision-making process.

“We only heard about it yesterday and were surprised. We were not included in any discussions regarding this fare increase,” Mr. Amoah said.

He noted that fare reviews are typically made through formal discussions involving all relevant parties, especially the Ministry of Transport.

“Normally, fare adjustments are decided collectively through stakeholder meetings, including the Ministry. This time, we weren’t part of such discussions,” he added.

Mr. Amoah indicated that the GPRTU will soon engage the Ministry of Transport to seek clarification and determine a way forward. He also questioned the practicality of enforcing the fare hike announced by the GRTCC, set to take effect on August 8, 2025.

“As things stand, it may not be feasible to implement the increase on the stated date,” he remarked.

While acknowledging that fare increases may be necessary in the future due to economic pressures, he stressed that any such move must follow proper procedures.

“There could be fare adjustments down the line, but they must go through the right channels,” Mr. Amoah concluded.
