The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has issued a strong warning to commercial drivers operating within the city, cautioning them against imposing unapproved transport fares.

In a statement released on Monday, July 28, 2025, by the KMA’s Public Relations Unit, the Assembly noted that some drivers are charging fares that have not been sanctioned by the official Tripartite Committee—made up of the Ministry of Transport, representatives of transport unions (GPRTU and GRTCC), and regulatory and consumer protection bodies.

The KMA stressed that such fare hikes are illegal and will not be tolerated.

The Assembly warned that drivers who flout this directive risk serious penalties, including the seizure of their vehicles and possible prosecution.

Metro Chief Executive Richard Ofori-Agyeman Boadi has instructed the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service, along with KMA Metro Guards, to patrol key routes and enforce compliance.

The KMA is calling on all commercial drivers and commuters to support the initiative in order to maintain discipline and restore order on Kumasi’s roads.
