Over 360 Bales of Counterfeit Diapers Seized in Tema

- FDA seizes 360+ bales of counterfeit diapers in Tema
- Importers mislabelled goods to bypass customs checks
- CPA urges prosecution, identifies two more fake importers
The Consumer Protection Agency (CPA) has commended the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) for a significant breakthrough in the fight against counterfeit products following the seizure of over 360 bales of fake diapers at Community 12 in Tema.
The operation, carried out by the FDA enforcement team on Thursday, July 24, 2025, was based on actionable intelligence that led officials to a residential property where the counterfeit diapers—equivalent to two full 40-foot shipping containers—were uncovered.
The CPA stated that the consignment was imported by a company identified as Natural Power, which allegedly attempted to evade detection by misdeclaring the items as “Disposable Plywoven Bags” under HS Code 392329, instead of the correct classification HS Code 9619 used for diapers.
In a related development, two additional containers suspected to contain fake diapers, imported by FK Clearing Cleaning Logistics (trading as Ness-D Diapers), were also impounded at the Meridian Port Services (MPS) terminal in Tema. The clearing agent reportedly fled the scene in June 2025, abandoning the containers.
The CPA applauded both the FDA and Ghana Customs for their vigilance, noting that their actions may have averted potential health risks for more than 2.5 million Ghanaian children.
In a statement issued on Monday, July 28, Nana Prempeh Okogyeabour Aduhene, Executive Director of CPA in charge of Media and Arbitration, called for the immediate prosecution of the importers to serve as a deterrent. He also revealed that the CPA had identified two more entities suspected of importing fake diapers and would be forwarding their information to the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) for investigation.
This latest seizure follows a similar operation in April 2025, during which the FDA destroyed over 1 million fake diapers, reinforcing its commitment to consumer safety and public health.
