1,000 Maternal Deaths in Ashanti Region Over Four Years – GHS

The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has reported that 1,000 women died during childbirth in the Ashanti Region between 2020 and 2024. This alarming figure highlights the ongoing challenge of maternal mortality, despite efforts to enhance maternal healthcare.

At the 2024 Regional Health Forum in the Ashanti Region, Regional Health Director Dr. Frank Adomanko Boateng stressed the urgent need for stronger actions to reduce the high rate of maternal deaths.

Dr. Boateng pointed out that the region is struggling to meet the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) target of reducing maternal mortality to 70 deaths per 100,000 live births by 2030.

“Time is running out as we aim to reach the target of 70 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births by 2030. The clock is ticking, and we must intensify our efforts,” Dr. Boateng urged.

He called for heightened measures over the next six years to close the gap and prevent further loss of lives.
