A devastating incident occurred in Kukubi, a town in the Kwaebibrem Municipal District, as two miners tragically lost their lives when a galamsey pit caved in during the early hours of the day.
Eyewitnesses reported that the two miners were trapped when the pit they were working in suddenly collapsed. Despite desperate efforts by fellow miners to rescue them, only their lifeless bodies were recovered.
The retrieval process was a difficult one, with the first victim’s body being recovered with the aid of an excavator. Unfortunately, the excavator severed the lower part of the victim’s body during the process. The second miner’s body was recovered several hours later, following traditional libation rites performed at the site.
The police have taken custody of the bodies and transported them to the mortuary as investigations into the incident continue.
This tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the persistent dangers associated with illegal mining activities, which continue to claim lives in the region.
