Unidentified youth in the Wenchi Municipality of the Bono Region launched a violent attack on the Municipal Police Commander, DSP Nana Boakye Yiadom, leaving him severely injured and enabling eight inmates to escape from police custody. The group also caused significant damage to the police station, vandalizing property and disrupting operations.
According to an anonymous police source, the incident occurred on Tuesday morning when DSP Yiadom went to the Tohaba area, a suburb of Wenchi, to apprehend a suspect. Upon discovering that the suspect was not present, the commander reportedly detained the suspect’s pregnant wife and brought her to the police station.
Outraged by the detention, a group of youth stormed the police station in an attempt to secure the woman’s release. During the attack, they damaged DSP Yiadom’s vehicle, the charge office, and various items, including a flat-screen TV, fridge, computer equipment, and sliding doors.
In the midst of the chaos, the attackers broke into the police cells and freed eight inmates.
DSP Yiadom is currently receiving treatment at the Bono Regional Teaching Hospital, and investigations into the incident are ongoing.
