The Member of Parliament for Hohoe, John Peter Amewu, has officially opened a brand-new 7,000-seater stadium in Hohoe, Volta Region. This milestone marks a significant boost to the development of sports infrastructure in the region, renowned for producing exceptional athletes who have made Ghana proud globally.
The idea for the stadium was conceived by Mr. Amewu in 2005, during his tenure as Hohoe Municipal Chief Executive. He generously donated 120,000 solid concrete blocks, initially intended for a hotel project, to kick-start the construction. Although the project was abandoned in 2008, it resumed in 2016, thanks to the support of the community, traditional leaders, and private individuals.
The stadium, which is about 90% complete, has a seating capacity of over 7,000 and can accommodate up to 10,000 spectators. Mr. Amewu expects the project to be fully completed by the first quarter of next year. The facility is poised to nurture talent in Hohoe and the Volta Region, with some local athletes already gaining recognition from national and international scouts.
Notably, Ghana Football Association President, Kurt Edwin Simeon-Okraku, attended the inauguration ceremony, praising the stadium as a critical infrastructure for Ghanaian football.
