NDC Praises Speaker Bagbin for Exemplary Leadership in Parliamentary Proceedings

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has lauded Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin for his adept handling of parliamentary proceedings on Tuesday, referring to his leadership during the session as “a masterclass.”

In a statement released by General Secretary Fifi Fiavi Kwetey on October 22, the NDC praised the Speaker’s “mature leadership” and his dedication to conducting Parliament’s business in a manner that benefits both the institution and the people of Ghana.

The party emphasized that Speaker Bagbin’s guidance has bolstered the integrity of Parliament and expressed confidence in his ability to uphold the independence of the legislative process. “We applaud him for working in the interest of Parliament and the people of Ghana and enhancing the integrity of Parliament with his leadership,” the NDC stated.

This commendation follows a tumultuous session on October 22, during which Speaker Bagbin adjourned proceedings amid a controversy regarding seat allocations. NDC legislators occupied the Majority side of the aisle, leading to an earlier walkout by Members of Parliament from the New Patriotic Party (NPP), who contested the opposition’s claim to majority status.

During the session, Speaker Bagbin confirmed that the House had sufficient numbers to conduct business but acknowledged that it was not enough for decision-making. He also agreed with Madina MP Francis-Xavier Sosu to correct the record, clarifying that the NPP group, which had exited the House, should be recognized as the Minority.

In response, the NDC expressed optimism that Parliament would prioritize the needs of Ghanaians over partisan interests. “We are confident that ultimately, the integrity and independence of Parliamentary processes will be upheld,” the statement continued.

The party also commended its Caucus for their resilience in the face of ongoing challenges, stating, “Their steadfastness inspires confidence and hope in our determination to resist oppressors’ rule and to give expression to the truth that power ultimately belongs to the people.”
