- Ghana Education Service revises academic calendar
- Schools to reopen October 30, 2024, for new academic year
- WASSCE exams to return to May/June schedule by 2026
Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, Ghana has been following an altered schedule for the West Africa Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) due to disruptions in student contact hours. In response, the Ghana Education Service (GES) has been implementing a transitional calendar aimed at returning to the traditional May/June exam period, aligning with other WASSCE member countries.
In a recent announcement, the GES outlined a proposed two-year examination schedule. According to the statement, “Incoming First Year students for Single Track and Transitional Schools will also begin school on Wednesday, 30th October 2024. Additionally, all continuing students in Single Track Schools will reopen for the new academic year on Wednesday, 30th October 2024.”
The GES further noted, “The re-opening date is purposed at ensuring that the school calendar starts in September next year and pave the way for the final year students to write their 2025/2026 WASSCE in May/June.”
Looking ahead, the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) will be held in June over the next two years. Meanwhile, the 2025 WASSCE candidates are scheduled to take their exams from July to August, while the 2026 candidates will sit for their exams in the traditional May to June timeframe.
