“I Have a New Movie on Galamsey” – Dr. Likee

Renowned Ghanaian comic actor Dr. Likee, also known as Akabenezer, has announced that he is set to release a movie addressing the pressing issue of illegal mining, commonly referred to as galamsey. This development comes in response to the alarming negative effects that illegal mining is having on the country’s water bodies and forest reserves, rendering many rivers unsafe for human consumption.

The environmental crisis has spurred several organizations, including the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) and the Technical University Teachers’ Association of Ghana (TUTAG), to embark on strikes demanding an immediate ban on all illegal mining activities. Most recently, Catholic Churches in Accra organized protests against galamsey on Friday, October 11.

During an appearance on The Bonah Show, Dr. Likee shared that he has created extensive content focusing on galamsey, with the climax of his work slated for release next month. He emphasized that the film aims to highlight the detrimental impacts of illegal mining practices.

“I have a whole lot of contents on galamsey. I even have a movie on it which will be released next month,” he stated.

The award-winning comic actor further clarified that the film is not politically motivated but instead seeks to address the urgent need to combat the environmental destruction caused by galamsey.

“The movie is not about politics but it advises us to stop galamsey. Because all our water bodies have deteriorated. If I come abroad, I see how water bodies are preserved, but for us, it keeps deteriorating,” he added.

As illegal mining continues to pose a significant threat to Ghana’s natural resources, calls for government intervention are growing louder. While pressure mounts from various organizations and individuals urging the government to take decisive action against galamsey, there has been a noticeable lack of swift response from authorities.
