Bawumia Vows Responsible Mining Practices, No Ban on Small-Scale Operations

Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Vice Presidential candidate, has reassured small-scale miners that a future NPP government will not ban their operations. Instead, the party will empower them to adopt responsible mining practices.

Speaking in the Manso Adubia constituency, Dr. Opoku Prempeh emphasized the need to distinguish between regulated and illegal mining. He pledged to promote sustainable practices within the small-scale mining sector.

The NPP flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has also promised to support responsible mining initiatives benefiting local communities and the economy.

This commitment comes amid tensions over the illegal mining crisis, known as “galamsey,” which has harmed the environment and workers’ livelihoods.

Organised Labour is set to begin a nationwide strike on October 10, 2024, demanding stronger government action against illegal mining.

Labour advocates for formalizing the small-scale mining industry while protecting the environment.

Dr. Opoku Prempeh stated, “A government led by Dr. Bawumia will promote responsible mining. We won’t mine to destroy water bodies and forests.”

He promised to make equipment for responsible mining available to Ghanaians.

The NPP’s approach prioritizes empowering small-scale miners and promoting sustainable practices.
