The General Secretary of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to proceed with a planned strike action against illegal mining on October 10.

Thomas Musah dismissed government efforts to dissuade Organised Labour from the protest, emphasizing the urgency of the matter.

Despite a recent meeting with President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, where the government appealed for patience, GNAT remains resolute in its demands.

The union is calling for a state of emergency in mining areas, the revocation of mining regulations, the withdrawal of mining licenses, and the establishment of special courts to prosecute illegal miners.

Musah explained that the decision to strike is a result of the ongoing devastation caused by illegal mining, and that Organised Labour cannot afford to wait for further government action.

He emphasized that the issue is a matter of life and death for many Ghanaians.
