The Media Coalition Against Galamsey has criticized the government for its perceived lack of urgency and effectiveness in combating illegal mining, known as galamsey.
In an interview, the Coalition Convener Ing. Kenneth Ashigbey condemned the government’s silence on the ongoing destruction of water bodies and forest reserves caused by galamsey.
He likened the scale of devastation to the actions of terrorists, calling for more decisive measures.
Ashigbey urged Organized Labour to disregard President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s appeal to postpone the planned October 10 protest against galamsey.
He argued that given the severe environmental damage and long-lasting impact of illegal mining, there is no time to delay action.
President Akufo-Addo had appealed to Organized Labour to reconsider its planned strike, assuring them of his commitment to addressing the issue of galamsey.
However, the Media Coalition believes that more concrete actions are needed to demonstrate the government’s seriousness in combating this environmental crisis.
