Renowned Ghanaian musician Okyeame Kwame has called on President Nana Akufo-Addo to take immediate and strong measures to combat illegal mining, also known as galamsey, which is devastating the country’s environment and water sources ¹ ²[3).
During his appearance on UTV’s United Showbiz, Okyeame Kwame emphasized the urgent need for action, citing recent demonstrations and public outcry against galamsey. He reminded the president of his pre-election promise to risk his presidency to address the issue.
“With only three months to the next election, why hasn’t the president addressed the critical condition of Ghana’s water bodies, which now resemble ‘Milo’ due to extreme pollution?” Okyeame Kwame asked ² ³. He urged President Akufo-Addo to issue a directive halting all galamsey operations immediately, with strict penalties for those who defy the order.
Okyeame Kwame suggested that the president’s reluctance to act might be driven by fear of losing votes, particularly for Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in the upcoming election ³. However, he encouraged the president to prioritize the nation’s well-being above political concerns.
The musician stressed that air and water are essential for human survival and that the destruction of Ghana’s water bodies demands a non-partisan approach.
