The Government of Ghana has announced plans to construct 1,000 housing units for individuals affected by the Akosombo Dam spillage. Minister for Works and Housing, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, made the announcement at a press conference in Accra.
On Monday, September 30, Oppong Nkrumah emphasized the government’s commitment to alleviating the hardships faced by displaced victims.
The Akosombo Dam spillage, which occurred on October 15, 2023, devastated communities along the Lower Volta Basin. Approximately 88,000 people were affected, and over 5,000 homes were destroyed.
Nearly a year later, many victims remain displaced, struggling to find permanent shelter. To address this issue, the government initiated the housing project.
According to Oppong Nkrumah, phase one of the project is already underway.
“115 housing units are under construction and have gone past the 60 percent mark,” he revealed. These units were part of the initial phase, which the minister broke ground for in April 2024.
Additionally, phase two of the project, comprising 1,010 units, has been approved. The government is finalizing Public Procurement Authority (PPA) and land acquisition processes to begin construction on phase two, having secured the commencement certificate.
