WAEC Threatens Legal Action Against Cheating Invigilators

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has vowed to hold accountable all invigilators implicated in cheating during the recently concluded West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

The exam, which began on August 5 and ended on September 20, was marred by incidents of exam malpractice, including the distribution of answers, smuggling of mobile devices, and the use of projectors to display answers.

According to WAEC’s Head of Public Relations, John Kapi, some invigilators have already faced fines, while others are awaiting legal proceedings. “We are conducting thorough investigations, and anyone found guilty will face the full force of the law,” Kapi stated.

He added that the council has taken a zero-tolerance stance against cheating, and any invigilator caught red-handed will be reported to the police. “We have already handed over several cases to the authorities, and some individuals have been remanded in custody,” Kapi said.

WAEC also expressed its gratitude to stakeholders who reported attempts by certain institutions to cheat during the exams.

The council reiterated its commitment to ensuring the integrity of the WASSCE and conducting fair and credible examinations.
