  • Singer Darkoo comes out as lesbian to Nigerian parents
  • Mom's reaction was hardest, yet most liberating
  • Parents accept Darkoo, prioritizing love over cultural differences

British-Nigerian singer Darkoo has candidly shared her experience of coming out as a lesbian to her Nigerian parents, revealing the emotional journey and their reactions during a recent interview on The Appointment Show with Layo.

Reflecting on the moment she disclosed her truth to her mother, Darkoo expressed relief, stating, “The day I told my mum I felt a massive weight off my shoulders and I’ve been happy since then. Trust me, I’m happy.” She emphasized that her happiness has flourished since that pivotal conversation, particularly because her family is now aware of her identity.

Darkoo described her relationship with her parents, noting that it was particularly challenging to come out to her mother due to their close bond. “It was harder with my mum because I’m closer to her and it was very emotional,” she explained. In contrast, she found the conversation with her father somewhat easier, despite him not being fully open to the topic. “My dad didn’t want to have the conversation; he didn’t stop it though. They’re not stupid so they figured it out, but at the end of the day, I’m living my life for me and that’s what I’m doing,” she added.

The singer emphasized the importance of authenticity in her life, stating, “This is what makes me happy and I feel whole. I don’t feel like I’m faking it or doing what I don’t want to do. This is me at the end of the day.”

While acknowledging her parents’ traditional views, Darkoo affirmed their unconditional love for her. “I bring girls home and my parents don’t mind. I have parents who love me for me, and at the end of the day, I know they don’t think what I’m doing is right because they’re African. But they love me and that’s what it is,” she concluded.
