Professor Dr. Paul Osei Sampene, a Pathologist and Researcher at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, has criticized the lack of accountability for illegal mining operators, also known as galamsey.
In an interview, Prof. Osei Sampene highlighted the significant threat posed by irresponsible mining to various aspects of Ghana’s development.
He urged the government to take immediate action, including stricter supervision and deterrent punishment.
“Irresponsible mining is a major concern,” he stated. “I question whether the government is listening to the people who have called for a state of emergency to stop these harmful activities. Those with licenses must be held accountable for their actions.”
Prof. Osei Sampene emphasized the need for tougher penalties to deter illegal mining. “The destruction of water bodies is a serious issue,” he said. “Punishments must be severe enough to discourage such practices.”
