Illegal Mining Crisis: Asuom Kontihene Urges Akufo-Addo to Step Up Before It’s Too Late

Nana Boadi Ampomenim Abodade III, the Kontihene of Asuom, has issued a heartfelt plea to President Akufo-Addo, urging him to take firm action against illegal mining before his presidency concludes.

Speaking in an interview, he voiced his deep frustration over the detrimental effects of illegal mining on the Asuom community.

Nana Abodade III pointed out the rampant abuse of regulations, noting how some individuals with prospecting licenses misuse them, while others operate without any contracts, causing significant environmental damage.

He specifically called out AC Zenon, reportedly connected to Amina Tahiru and Abu Jinapor, for ignoring community demands to halt operations and restore affected lands.

The Kontihene emphasized that President Akufo-Addo has a unique opportunity to create a meaningful legacy by addressing this pressing issue.

He reminded the President of his commitment to combat galamsey and urged him to take significant action within the next two months.

He proposed convening a meeting to reassess the mining sector and develop sustainable solutions. “Individuals with prospecting licenses are abusing them, while those without contracts are recklessly destroying our environment,” he stated.

Nana Abodade III also highlighted the local youth’s demand for an immediate stop to the destructive practices, mentioning that most companies complied except for Amina Tahiru, who reportedly employs military personnel to protect her operations.

“Mr. President, you’re our uncle and a brother. We have limited time left, but I believe you can effect change. Your legacy hinges on your commitment to combat galamsey. Posterity will not forgive you if you fail to act now. Please, we urge you to take decisive measures,” he concluded. “When a ban was implemented before, we saw positive results in weeks—let’s go back to the drawing board and do this right.”
