The Ministry of Interior has officially designated Monday, September 23, 2024, as a public holiday to commemorate the Memorial Day of Ghana’s first president, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, whose birthday is on September 21.
In a statement released on September 19, Interior Minister Henry Quartey encouraged all Ghanaians to observe this day.
“Since September 21 falls on a Saturday this year, His Excellency, the President of the Republic of Ghana, has issued an Executive Instrument to recognize Monday, September 23, 2024, as an additional public holiday, to be celebrated nationwide,” he noted.
This holiday is part of the New Public Holidays Act of 2018, which revised the previous Public Holidays Act of 2001.
Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Day serves to honor the legacy of Dr. Nkrumah, who was born on September 21, 1909, in Nkroful, near Axim. If he were alive today, we would be celebrating his 115th birthday.
