WASSCE 2024: Students Attack Teachers for Enforcing Anti-Cheating Rules
- Students attack teachers over strict WASSCE supervision
- Incident occurred on September 17, 2024, at Chrimeto
- Police detain four students, but doubts remain about involvement
- Authorities investigate to address examination malpractice and teacher safety
A disturbing incident unfolded at Christian Methodist Senior High School (Chrimeto) on Tuesday, September 17, 2024, when students attacked teachers for refusing to allow cheating during the ongoing West African Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
The chaos erupted after students, enraged by the teachers’ strict adherence to examination rules, began hurling stones and sachets of water at them.
Walter Yesutor Adanunyo, one of the assaulted teachers, recounted the harrowing experience. After Monday’s integrated science paper, Adanunyo and the Head of Department were warned by a student about a mob threatening harm at the school’s gate if strict supervision continued.
On Tuesday, September 17, when police were absent, students began throwing objects at the teachers. Adanunyo described how he, two other permanent teachers, and two service personnel were targeted.
“Some students took alternate routes and confronted us halfway, accusing me of being too strict and not allowing cheating,” Adanunyo explained.
The confrontation was captured on video, showing students chasing teachers, including Adanunyo, who fled for his safety.
Police reportedly detained four students, but Adanunyo doubts they were the same ones involved in the attack.
This incident echoes a similar violent outbreak at Bright Senior High School in the Eastern Region, where students displayed aggressive behavior during WASSCE a few years ago.
The authorities are currently investigating the incident at Chrimeto to address safety concerns and tackle the persistent issue of examination malpractices in Ghanaian schools.
The incident has raised concerns about the safety and well-being of teachers and the need for urgent measures to prevent such incidents in the future.
