NDC Draws a Line: No Galamsey Affiliates in Leadership
- NDC will not appoint anyone linked to illegal mining to public office
- The party emphasizes the importance of protecting Ghana’s natural resources
- Voters are encouraged to elect leaders who prioritize the community's interests
Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, the NDC’s vice presidential candidate, firmly reiterated the party’s commitment to combating illegal mining, known as galamsey.
Speaking at the Kundum festival in Axim, she stated that individuals associated with illegal mining will not be appointed to any governmental positions.
Highlighting the NDC’s dedication to responsible governance, she declared that under their administration, anyone involved in galamsey would be barred from public office.
The issue of galamsey remains critical in Ghana due to its damaging effects on the environment, including deforestation, water contamination, and the destruction of agricultural lands.
Communities near mining sites have suffered greatly, facing the consequences of polluted water bodies and devastated farmlands.
Despite various government measures, galamsey continues to threaten the country’s natural resources.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang emphasized the importance of environmental stewardship, promising the NDC’s commitment to safeguarding water bodies and natural resources.
“We will not appoint anyone connected to galamsey, unlike the current administration,” she asserted.
She also urged voters to choose leaders who genuinely represent the people’s interests in the upcoming December elections.
“We need to elect true servant-leaders,” she added, expressing confidence that the residents of Axim will support the current Member of Parliament, Kofi Arkoe Nokoe, for a successful electoral outcome, emphasizing that peace thrives when elections are fair and transparent.
