  • 2020 anti-galamsey efforts led to lost votes.
  • Gov't prioritizes election wins over governance.
  • Vanderpuye demands action against galamsey.

Edwin Nii Lante Vanderpuye, Member of Parliament for Odododiodoo, has made a striking allegation against President Akufo-Addo.

Vanderpuye claims the President is deliberately avoiding decisive action against illegal mining, known as galamsey, due to fear of losing votes.

This accusation comes amid growing demands for the government to declare a state emergency and ban small-scale mining activities.

The calls for action are driven by the severe disruption of water bodies caused by illegal mining.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s The Big Issue, Vanderpuye criticized the government’s lack of leadership in addressing the issue.

He alleged that government officials prioritize winning elections over governing the country.

Vanderpuye cited the 2020 experience, where efforts to combat galamsey resulted in lost votes, as evidence of the government’s inaction.

He stated that the government has explicitly chosen not to solve the problem to avoid losing votes.

Vanderpuye emphasized that leadership is the key to resolving the issue, but it has been lacking under the current government.

The MP concluded that the government’s inaction is motivated by political expediency, prioritizing election wins over effective governance.
